if it is not a good report. this will further the obama slipping story line. if it was a surprisingly or better than expected report, maybe the debate last night is a thing of the past for president obama. remember, there is a vice presidential debate in a week from today, but it's a little while until the next presidential debate. if the story line is if mitt romney won clearly, bad jobs report, we could go from now until the next presidential debate with with that narrative, which is good for mitt romney and bad for barack obama. >> the last jobs report was in the mix, so this one is more important. thank you so much, chris. that does it for us for this edition of "andrea mitchell reports." tamron has a look at what's next on "news nation." hi, tamron. >> a victory for mitt romney, but did he win because he's so vague last night. ezra kline joins us. what might be the million dollar question. why didn't president obama bring up romney's 47% remarks? bain capital or even more details on romney's taxes. well, patrick gaspar from the dnc will join me live. we'll find out what he knows. our "news nati

. good day, andrea mitchell live in denver at the site of tonight's presidential debate, the first time in five years that barack obama and mitt romney are going to be face-to-face in what the local newspaper is headlining as the duel in denver. joining me now for our daily fix, chris cizilla, msnbc contributor and managing editor of post politics.com. first of all, this, the big face-off, let's talk about the state of the race. we have new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll numbers showing a slight tightening in the race. fou looks as though mitt romney is in the national polls slightly narrowing the gap. other problems within those numbers, problems for romney. >> yeah. i mean first of all let me say i love duel in denver. i'm a big fan of that one. i think andrea, look, last week there was a ton of polling both in swing states and nationally that i think caught barack obama sort of at the apex of the bounce he had received post-convention and post a couple bad weeks for mitt romney and mitt romney at the nader of where he could possibly be in a race where you have the country as div

away from thes first presidential debate in denver where mitt romney and barack obama will be trying to reach a shrinking pool of undecided voters. joining me for our daily fix, chris cizilla. the challenges for both. everyone trying to lower expectations but the fact is, that both of these -- both of these debaters are experienced, they both had primary debates but there is a challenge first for mitt romney, he's never gone head-to-head against barack obama and for the president, he has not debated in a while. he didn't have any -- of course didn't have any primary challenges this year. >> right. andrea, i always think it's hilarious, last night in las vegas barack obama said i'm an okay debater. it's like when lou holtz was the coach of notre dame and playing east/west texas state, i don't know, they're pretty strong this year. you have to put it in some context. both of these people as you point out have risen to a point where they are the nominees for president for the parties. neither are bad debaters. they are both able and capable. you're right. look, barack obama hasn't debat

so, though, my guess is barack obama will not let this apology be the last word on it. >> and also get ahead of it before the vice presidential debate because you know joe biden was going to go after it. still inexplicable why the president didn't use it wednesday night. thank you so much, chris. see you later. joining me now to dig deeper into the jobs data, u.s. economic economist for the president. >> definitely good news in the context of all the bad news in recent months. the headline growth of employment of 114,000 was good but not spectacular. if you dig deeper you find they revised up prior months so running around 150,000 per month, somewhat better not indicative of a economy going into recession, perhaps one getting a little tail wind to it. the drop in the unemployment rate from 8.1% to 7.8%, as you know, sometimes it drons for the wrong reason because people give up looking for work. that was not the case in september, 800,000 people by this measure of employment found jobs, one of the largest increases by that measure in the last eight or nine years. >> mitt romney wen
